Getting started with Short Term Respite at Assist Ability Australia is simple and supportive:
We’re here to ensure your STR experience is positive, personalised, and memorable.
Unlike other accommodation types, STR is generally all-inclusive. It covers the cost of the accommodation, your personal care support, food, and activities you agree to during your stay.
STR is designed for short periods. Typically, the NDIS funds up to 14 days at a time, with a total general limit of 28 days per year. However, this depends entirely on your specific plan and goals.
No. The NDIS does not fund holidays. However, they may fund the disability-related support and accommodation costs required for you to take a break from your routine, provided it meets your plan goals (such as increasing independence or giving carers respite).
Yes. While it is often used for carer respite, you can also use STR to build your own independence, try living away from home, or make new friends in a group setting.
Not necessarily. STR can be provided in various settings, including dedicated respite centers, shared SDA properties, or sometimes hotels/apartments, provided the support is delivered by an NDIS provider.
You can, but it is not a long-term solution. If you are waiting for a house for a period longer than 14 days, Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is usually the correct funding category, not STR.
The main difference is the purpose and what is included. STR is for respite (short breaks) and includes food/activities. MTA is for transitional housing (waiting for a home) and only covers the accommodation, not your food or support.
Yes. Before accessing Short-Term Respite (STR), the NDIA expects the support, costs and delivery to be agreed in advance with your provider, usually through a quote and service agreement. For plan-managed or NDIA-managed participants, your Plan Manager or the NDIA must acknowledge these arrangements before services commence to ensure claims can be paid.
No, but we’re always hiring which means your carer can take care of you if they’re employed by Assist Ability Australia.
STA is now known as STR.
